GENES. There’s a lot of misconception around genes. Testing is especially helpful if you’re up against a health issue and you’re not really sure where to go next. Testing your DNA can be a great first step in getting you pointed in the right direction.
I can’t tell you how many messages I’ve received over the years with women telling me they’re mass-supplementing with methylated B vitamins because they have MTHFR. Stop.
Just because you have a certain gene doesn’t mean it’s expressing, or that there’s an issue.
For example, I know that I have a propensity toward lowered vitamin A. So, if I start experiencing bumps on the back of my arms, dry skin, inability to see at night, dry eyes, there’s a pretty good chance my vitamin A is getting low. Do I need to supplement with vitamin A daily? No. Vitamin A is toxic and too much of it is really bad for the liver. But, knowing I have this potential is super helpful.
Understanding how your genes express is the first step to wrapping your head around all of this.
The next step, is getting a DNA test (open to Canadians, too!) and working with a company that provides a high-quality report that you can actually action.
