In a Jiffy Bean Salad

By March 2, 2017

Until a couple of years ago, I thought salt, was salt. Table salt, sea salt, it’s all the same and it’s all bad for you. Right? Wrong! Did you know there are actually therapeutic benefits to certain salts? Or that if taken correctly, salt can actually be good for your health? I know, you’re thinking I’m crazy… read on. Just as fresh fruits and vegetables are good for you [due to the limited amount of processing they’ve been through], so is natural, unprocessed salt. The less processing any food goes through, the more nutrients it’s going to have. Simple as that. Salt is absolutely essential for life, so it would make sense that the salt you choose can have a major impact on your health. Good news is that it’s probably one of the easiest things to change in your daily diet!

Table salt

Table salt is 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals such as moisture absorbents, and iodine. It is processed at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, altering the natural chemical structure of the salt. This process strips the natural elements from the salt, leaving it devoid of the nutrients needed to properly digest the salt.

Sea salt

Over the last 100 years especially, our oceans have become polluted and full of heavy metals. Before sea salt can be enjoyed by the masses, it has to be refined to remove these toxins and processed to remove clay, stones, etc. This process strips the natural elements from the salt, leaving it devoid of the nutrients needed to properly digest the salt. Of the 84 natural elements, less than 4 are left intact after it is processed.

Himalayan rock salt

This salt comes from the 250 million year old salt range in the Himalayas in Pakistan. Due to its old age, the salt is 95-99% pure, meaning it doesn’t have to go through the refining process that sea salt or table salt does. Of the 84 elements, all are left intact. What can these 84 elements do for you? [aka why is Himalayan rock salt so awesome?]
  • Support respiratory health
  • Promote sinus health
  • Promote blood sugar health
  • Regulate blood pressure [when taken with water]
  • Aid in the digestion and assimilation of nutrients
  • Prevent muscle cramps
  • Regulate the water content throughout your body
  • Promote a healthy pH balance
  • Promote bone strength
So there you have it, salt at its finest. For me, it’s an easy choice. Himalayan rock salt FTW [for the WIN!]

Making the switch

You can find Himalayan rock salt at any natural food store, and many groceries stores are now selling it as well. Also, try looking for products such as canned beans, soups, etc. that are salt free and add in your own salt afterward. Your health will thank you for it!
